Chosen most often by other players
Three things, and the first is the one most often forgotten. There has to be something to do while the other player takes their turn. In a group, a slow player does not stand out much; with two, you are simply sitting there waiting. Good two-player games keep you thinking along, or they switch so quickly that waiting does not exist.
The game also has to hold up to repeat plays. With two, you play the same game more often than with a group, so a box that is worn out after five rounds does not make the cut.
And the third point is one that works in your favour. In a group, a player who can no longer win can decide who does by getting in someone else's way. With board games for 2 players that does not happen: there are only two sides, and both are playing to win.
That is the first question to answer, and it says more about the two of you than about the game.
Would you rather team up against the game? Then you are looking for a cooperative game. With two players that often works better than with four, because nobody takes over everyone else's plan. Take a look at our cooperative games too.
Would you rather play against each other? Then a game designed specifically for two is almost always the better choice. Those games assume there is exactly one opponent and build on that.
Five different directions, one for every taste.
If you want to work together, Sky Team is the best choice around. Pilot and co-pilot land a plane together, and talking it over is not allowed. It won the Spiel des Jahres in 2024.
If you like a calm puzzle, Patchwork by Uwe Rosenberg is the classic: two patchwork quilts, and the gaps you leave count against you.
Looking for something sharper? Then 7 Wonders Duel from 2015 is the answer. Every card you take reveals the next one for your opponent.
And if you would rather build something side by side than play against each other, Everdell Duo is the one: the forest of Everdell, scaled down to exactly two players.
Want something you really sit down for? The White Castle Duel is the heaviest of the five: a duel for influence at the court of Himeji, in which you choose your actions with lantern tokens while triggering the effects of your cards. Half an hour, and every move has consequences.

Are two-player board games less fun than games for bigger groups? No, they are different. You play more directly against each other and you notice sooner what your opponent is up to. Many players find that a game actually gets sharper with two.
Can I play a 4-player board game with just 2 people? Often, yes, but not always equally well. Games in which you trade resources or vote fall apart with two players. So you are better off looking for a game made for two, or a box that includes a separate two-player variant.
What is a good 2-player board game for beginners? Patchwork or 7 Wonders Duel. Both are explained in under ten minutes, both are over within half an hour, and both are good enough to play dozens of times.
Do you have cooperative board games for 2 players? Yes. Sky Team is the best known, and you will find more in the cooperative games category.
