Players with lots of games under their belt often say it feels a bit on the easy side, yet they usually lost their first few games. If you want more of a challenge, they suggest turning the difficulty up (Epic or Legendary); they also find solo or five-player games tougher than two or three players.
Many players go for the true solo variant and feel that puzzling with your hand of cards makes it even more fun. Others prefer running several characters themselves, or find the solo rules a bit clunky because they don't always fit well with the heroes' powers. So it differs per player; both ways work and play quite differently.
Players mostly advise plenty of talking things through: get the Eye away from Frodo as soon as you can and trade cards, since with five players they are spread across more hands. It also helps to move your characters together in groups, so you combine their abilities and get Frodo his rings and cloaks in time.
Many players say 3 is the nicest count, because you really have to swap cards and talk things through together. With 5 players some feel it drags a bit, since you wait a long time for your next turn. Others enjoy playing with just two, which feels calmer and more focused, and one player actually prefers having more characters on the board.
Players say the rules sit roughly in Pandemic territory, but a step heavier: there is more setup and the card types all work differently. The real challenge, they feel, lies in the choices you make together, since the best move is rarely obvious. With someone at the table who already knows the rules, most groups get the hang of it after one round.
Many players find the introductory setup surprisingly tough, especially the objective to challenge Sauron; some lost it several times before finally winning. The advice that keeps coming back: avoid fights you don't need, roll as few searches as possible, and keep your hope and your havens safe. With different objectives or fewer players, several people say it feels a lot friendlier.
