Publisher: Days of Wonder
Fancy taking command on the beaches of Normandy yourself? In Memoir '44 you face each other as the Allies or the Axis in famous battles of the Second World War. The game was designed by Richard Borg, is published by Days of Wonder and belongs to the much-loved Commands & Colors family.
Each scenario sets up a historical battle on the large hexagonal game board. Terrain tiles recreate woods, hedgerows, villages and rivers, and the troops are deployed just as they were at the time. Then it is up to you. The battlefield is divided into three sections – the left flank, the centre and the right flank – and each turn your command cards decide which units go into action. Infantry, tanks and artillery each have their own strengths, so choosing wisely pays off.
Combat is resolved with special dice. The first player to collect the number of victory medals the scenario calls for wins the battle. A game takes roughly half an hour to an hour, so you can easily play a scenario twice: once from each side. Memoir '44 is quick to explain, works well from age 8 and still offers plenty of tactical choices to keep you coming back. A great introduction to wargames, and a lovely excuse to dive into history together.
