Step back in time to the start of the last century, when flying was still a great adventure. Magnificent Flying Machines takes you to the thrilling air races of around 1908 to 1913. In those years people all over the world cheered along the route, while newspapers and sponsors put up big prizes for the winners. But flying was dangerous and the machines broke down all the time. Often only a handful of entrants ever reached the finish. Can your pilot take on that challenge? You do not win just by crossing the finish line first. In fact, that is usually not enough. You score points by being the first to make a neat landing on a certain type of terrain, by touching down on the central airfield, by carrying cargo or passengers, or by pulling off daring stunts in the air. And watch out: in this era of proper gentlemen with sturdy moustaches, there are a few cheats among them who will do anything to win. Whoever picks the right approach for their pilot and their machine holds the best cards. The game is played in rounds, with everyone taking turns. On your turn you choose between taking off, flying and landing, each with its own details such as refuelling, repairing, gaining altitude or performing stunts. For every test you roll dice to collect enough symbols. Does it not work out right away? Then you can use spare parts or play cards to give yourself a boost. But beware of the disaster symbol, because things can go badly wrong. Around the table there is laughter, cheering and the occasional loud curse. Exactly as it should be in a real air race.
