Publisher: Decision Games (I)
It is the winter of 1944 and the Soviets are closing their pincers around the German troops near the town of Cherkassy. Retreating is not allowed, because Hitler has forbidden it. And so the German units become trapped, with only a small airfield near Korsun left as a lifeline. In Cherkassy Pocket: Encirclement at Korsun you take one side of this icy battle and you decide how the fight ends. If you play the Soviets, you tighten the grip on the encircled troops ever further. If you choose the German side, you try to break through the outer lines and save your men before it is too late. Each turn stands for one day and you may move and fight twice. That comes in handy, because you can advance first and then attack, or the other way around. The special rules bring the real battlefield to life, from stalling Soviet tanks to supply via the airfield. Cherkassy Pocket: Encirclement at Korsun was designed by John Desch and uses a system similar to his earlier games. You play with four different scenarios, from short battles to the complete campaign of 23 turns. A game for two lovers of history and tactics who want to sink into this piece of war together for hours. Playing solo works fine too, so you do not always have to wait for an opponent.
