This edition is in German, English, French and Spanish. The castles of Burgundy are located in the Burgundy region of France in the High Middle Ages. Each player takes on the role of an aristocrat who starts out ruling a small princedom. As they play, they want to build settlements and mighty castles, trade along the river, work silver mines and use the knowledge of travellers.
The game is about players taking settlement tiles from the game board and placing them in their princedom, which is shown by the player board. Each tile has a function that starts when the tile is placed in the princedom. The princedom itself consists of several regions, each of which needs its own type of settlement tile.
Each phase begins by filling the game board with settlement tiles and goods. At the start of each round:
After that, players take two actions in turn order. You can choose from:
✅ Take a settlement tile – Choose a tile from a depot with a number matching one of your dice and place it in your staging area.
✅ Build a tile – Move a tile from your staging area to a space on your player board with the same die number. Note: this space must connect to a previously built tile and match the type of terrain!
✅ Deliver goods – Sell a goods token with the same number as your die.
✅ Collect workers – Take workers so you can adjust the value of your dice later.
On top of that, you may always buy a settlement tile from the central depot and place it on your player board.
Every settlement tile gives you an advantage! Think of:
🛠️ Extra actions or money
📈 Going before your opponent (so you can grab the best tiles!)
🎲 Die adjustments
🏆 Immediate victory points
You also get bonus points if you completely fill a region with tiles!
The game ends after the fifth round of the fifth phase. After that, points are still awarded for:
💰 Leftover money and workers
📦 Undelivered goods
🏰 Special bonus points from certain tiles
Whoever has the most points after scoring wins and becomes the mightiest ruler of The Castles of Burgundy! Are you ready to expand your realm and go down in history? 🚀
The 2019 edition of The Castles of Burgundy contains eight expansions, seven of which were released earlier as promotional material and one of which is new for this edition (Shields).
