On a hill a strange building looms, bathed in twilight. Curious, you walk over to take a closer look at the pagoda. Then you hear a laugh, you see a shadow that is not yours, and suddenly an eye comes to life. Without meaning to, you have woken ten powerful Japanese spirits, the Yokai that rested here. Can you calm their anger? A game of Yokai Pagoda lasts three rounds. Each turn you play exactly one card, until someone ends the round. The hundred number cards are shuffled, spread over ten kinds of Yokai and numbered from 1 to 10. Two cards are laid face up as discard piles, everyone gets seven cards and the rest forms the pagoda pile in the middle. If you play the same Yokai or the same number, you give a card from your hand to another player. If you play a different Yokai with a higher number, you may take a card yourself. And with a lower number you choose: keep playing, or stop the round if you have only three points or fewer in hand. The beauty is in the choices. Giving cards away, playing on or wrapping up at exactly the right moment, that is what makes the difference. At the end of each round you keep your cards, and after three rounds the player with the fewest points wins. Pay close attention, because only the lowest card of each Yokai counts. A game that moves along nicely and in which you keep trying to stay one step ahead of each other.
