Publisher: Decision Games (I)
In the summer of 1847, Winfield Scott's American army stands at the gates of Mexico City. Instead of attacking the heavily fortified routes east of the city, Scott chooses a bold flanking move to the south. There he finds large lakes and a vast lava field: the Pedregal. The Mexicans believe this area is impassable for large bodies of troops, but the American engineer officers keep finding a path through the rugged landscape. Even so, the American army is about half the size of the Mexican one, and it is spread across several routes. One well-timed attack can tip the balance. Pedregal: Santa Anna at Bay uses the Musket & Saber system to give a believable picture of warfare in this period. Infantry, artillery and cavalry each feel different. Your infantry is tough and carries the heaviest part of the fighting. Artillery can break attacks or punch holes in the enemy line, but it is vulnerable. Cavalry is weak in a straight fight, but essential in the pursuit. Weakened units may rout, and the fortunes of war can always strike. Keeping reserves in hand is no luxury. This is a two-player game about choosing your positions, massing your forces at the right moment and using your army commanders well. The player who understands the strengths and weaknesses of both armies, and who protects his headquarters and supply lines, has the best chance of victory. A meaty challenge for fans of history and tactics.
