In Kartini: From Darkness to Light you run schools for girls from all over Indonesia. They come to your school from different islands to learn. When they are done, they head out into the world as a politician, fighter, benefactor or teacher. That way they help new girls move forward and contribute to the struggle for a free country. You divide your duits (your money) and your books wisely, because you want as many girls as possible to succeed. Keep a close eye on your school's reputation while you do. After three rounds, the player with the most points wins. This game is set in Indonesia, at the end of the nineteenth and the start of the twentieth century. At that time the country was fighting for its freedom, away from Dutch colonial rule. Young women took the lead back then. They fought and took part in politics for a free Indonesia. A number of them saw that education was the key and built schools, so that more and more girls could learn and take part. The name comes from Kartini, a Javanese noblewoman who wrote letters to her Dutch friends. In them she told of the wish of Indonesian women to learn and to count. Those letters were later collected in a book: 'From Darkness to Light'. They are seen as one of the foundations of the women's movement in Indonesia and were a great source of inspiration for the fight for independence.
