Many players feel the game shines most with 1 or 2 people, because the pacing and the decisions work best that way. Others happily play with 3 or 4 and stay drawn in by the story the whole time, though some do notice a bit of waiting at 3 players. Want to play with more than four? Teaming up and sharing a role together is a lovely solution.
Players say a single run only covers a small part of the map, so there is still plenty left to discover next time. Some get dozens of hours and several runs out of it, while others feel the stories start to feel familiar after a number of plays. What you learned about the islands before helps you when you start fresh.
Many players are very enthusiastic about it, some even give it a 10 out of 10, but they also say it is not for everyone: you look after nine characters, you need a fair bit of table space, and the combat and resource management ask for your attention. Players experience the mood differently: some feel it is a tense game of survival where you are barely hanging on, while others see it as a colourful adventure all about exploring.
Yes, playing on your own works well, and players say the true solo rules are even simpler, since you don't have to pay yourself to use other crew members. Because your whole crew always stays together on the map, most players find it easy to keep track of. Those who play several hands sometimes notice that following all the cards and skills becomes a bit much.
No, players say the base box already holds enough adventure for your first campaigns, and the game never sends you to areas you don't own. Some do add Tides of Ruin right away, because it brings extra market and event cards from the start. Others enjoyed exploring the base game first and adding more later.
Players experience this differently. Some feel two is the sweet spot and notice a lot of downtime and long discussions at four, while others played a full campaign with four and loved it, since everyone manages fewer characters and it feels more like a real crew. So it mostly depends on your group: if they enjoy story, reading aloud and deciding together, four can work just fine.
