Welcome to Edo. This is the Dutch-language edition.
Edo is the old name for Tokyo. IKI is therefore set during the Edo period in Japan (1603-1868). The city's liveliest market is in the Nihonbashi district. All kinds of vendors display their wares along the main street and draw in crowds of customers. Not far from the main street lies a fish market, where boats come to unload their cargo and the chatter of buyers and sellers fills the air.
Craftspeople and vendors live in Nagayas: houses around the main street. They have all sorts of different skills that are essential to daily life for the people of Edo. Edo is thought to have had some 700 to 800 different trades: makers of fans or lanterns, tatami weavers, printers, street vendors, tempura or sushi sellers, geishas, kabuki actors...
You will find many of these trades on the playing cards of IKI.
