Step back in time to the years 1914 to 1918, when all of Europe was ablaze. In Death in the Trenches: The Great War 1914-1918 (Second Edition) you take command of the armies of nearly forty countries. From the opening shots in Serbia and Belgium to the final decisive battle in 1918: you decide how history unfolds. The map stretches from the Pyrenees to Moscow and from Norway to Sudan, with 520 beautifully drawn playing pieces that bring the real armies of that era to life. This game feels big, but it is quite manageable. The rules are clear and you are up and running quickly, though mastery does take some practice. Every battle is fought out on a separate board that recreates a real engagement, with an attacking force pushing into a target area. Digging trenches stays simple, but time and manpower determine how strong your defence becomes. Along the way you will run into countless historical events, from the Russian Revolution to the uprisings in the Balkans, which can easily turn the course of the war. Will you play head to head with two players, or take on the challenge on your own? Both are possible. Count on a long evening together at the table, because a full game takes about five hours. Do you think you would have done better than the generals of the day? This is your chance to prove it.
