How do you organise an unforgettable board game night?

By Eege from Kapitein Spel The moment has come: your friends or family are coming round to try out your new board game. Good company is of course the key to success, but with a few handy preparations you can turn it into an evening to remember! With these tips you create a cosy atmosphere, keep things running smoothly, and make sure everyone is looking forward to the next time when the evening is over.

1. Preparation: a flying start

Good preparation is half the battle, and that goes for a board game night too. Here is how to go about it!

Choose games that suit your guests

Not everyone likes the same kind of game. While one person loves a tactical strategy game, another prefers a light dice game. Match your choice to the people at the table, so that everyone has fun, even if the game is not your own personal favourite.

Learn the rules beforehand

Nobody likes waiting endlessly while you are still reading the rules. Take the time to go through the rules in advance. Or even better: play a practice game so you understand how the game works. Not in the mood for reading? Look for an explainer video online; many publishers offer short, clear videos that explain the game in just a few minutes.

Set up the game in advance

A table with the board game already neatly set up is instantly inviting. Colourful pieces and a tidy layout create a cosy atmosphere and save time. Your guests can start playing straight away! Child and grandad playing a game together

2. Ambience: bring the game to life

The right atmosphere takes your board game night to the next level. These creative ideas make it extra special!

Adjust the lighting to suit the theme of the game

Choose red light for a tense game, for example, green for a nature-themed game, or warm, soft light for a cosy feel. Do make sure everything stays easy to read, so nobody has to squint at the board or their cards.

Put on fitting music

Platforms such as Spotify have countless themed playlists. Film scores often work well as background music. Think of a pirate tune for an adventure game or suspenseful violins for a mysterious murder game.

Serve snacks and drinks in style

Give your evening an extra twist with snacks that match the game. Mint liquorice coins for Monopoly, exotic nibbles for an exploration game, or colourful mocktails for a festive theme. Worried about spills? Agree on clear house rules about food and drink beforehand. Artboard 5

3. While you play: flexible and fun

Everything is ready, the mood is right, and everyone is keen to play. But you can also keep things running smoothly during the game!

Be flexible with your choice of game

Perhaps your guests would rather play something other than what you had planned. Keep one or two alternative games within reach. The most important thing is that everyone has fun.

Rules questions? Keep the rulebook handy

Even with good preparation, there can be confusion about the rules. Keep the rulebook within reach so you can quickly look something up. Take your time to explain everything, so nobody gets frustrated.

Keep an eye on the playing time

Bear in mind the energy and enthusiasm of the group. Long, complicated games can feel heavy going when you have already been playing for a few hours. At that point, choose a lighter game to round off the evening in a relaxed way.
