December 1944. A winter offensive breaks out unexpectedly in the forests of the Ardennes. With Winter Thunder: The Battle of the Bulge you step into the shoes of the commanders and relive one of the best known battles in history. This two-player game challenges you to make the right choices at the right moment, while the snow falls and the tension rises. The game revolves around two special ideas. During the operations phase your headquarters are activated in turn by drawing random chits from a pile. So you never know exactly when it is your turn, which makes every round unpredictable. And in combat there is almost no dice rolling: you compare both players' plans and only then does it become clear whether a unit takes losses. That way every battle feels like a contest of tactics and nerve. With sturdy die-cut counters, an atmospheric map by John Cooper and clear rules, you are up and playing in no time. There is even a system for playing the game on your own, handy if you want to practise or simply fancy a long afternoon of strategy. Count on about three hours together at the table, in which every decision counts.
