Just over three thousand years ago, the island of Thera was hit by a huge volcanic eruption, a hundred times stronger than the one at Pompeii. In Thera you take on the role of a governor who is ordered by the king to rebuild the ruined island. Whoever restores the island most beautifully to its former glory wins the game. Each player has their own map of the island and picks one of the five roles on their turn. There is a priestess who prays for rain, a worker who produces resources, a planner who moves everything around the island, a builder who puts up buildings and a trader who buys and sells resources in the harbour. What makes this special is that everyone benefits from the role that is chosen, but the player who chooses gets the most out of it. That keeps every choice exciting. To score points you build on empty spaces all over the island. You need to get the right resources to the right place and claim the building plans in time, before someone else does. Do you go for an extra quarry, or quickly grab that temple that fits your plan perfectly? Thera is all about thinking ahead and dividing your resources cleverly.
