Far to the north, where the days are dark and the nights are white, the river Mezen flows. Horses gallop towards it, birds gather along its banks and foxes come running. People too were once enchanted by it and stayed. To capture that beauty, they mixed soot, black as the night, with clay, red as the sun. This is how the famous Mezen painting style was born, and this game is all about that art. In Mezen you step into the shoes of a northern craftsman. You make fine, decorated paintings to order. Each turn you pick a group of identical symbols that lie next to each other and remove them from your painting. The tiles above slide down and fill the empty spaces. You flip the removed tiles from white to black and place them back in the open spots. By laying out the symbols differently again and again, you work towards your goals and earn points. After ten rounds everyone counts their points and whoever has the most wins. It is lovely to sit together at the table and watch each painting slowly take shape, and Mezen also plays very well solo.
