According to the old Orkneyinga Saga, in the year 1150 Earl Rognvald broke into the burial mound of Maeshowe on the Orkney Islands. A few years later, Earl Harald sheltered there with his men during a snowstorm. The stories tell that Rognvald found a treasure there and that two of Harald's men lost their minds. In Maeshowe: an Orkney Saga you crawl into that dark burial chamber yourself and fight for your life. You play alone or together with someone. Each turn you place one card in the row and discard one. You hold five cards in your hand and every time you must choose: what do you play, and what do you let go? Meanwhile you keep an eye on your health, your food and the number of cards you can still draw. To escape, you clear rubble with sets of four "Excavation" cards. Start such a set at the wrong moment and you lose cards, which makes your chance of survival smaller. Does your health run out or is your deck empty? Then archaeologists will find you hundreds of years later. Along the way danger lurks around every corner: the passage can collapse and your food can run out. But there is hope too. A moment of rest or a raven from Odin himself can give you exactly the relief you need. This updated version of Lee Broderick's original game plays more smoothly than ever and is full of mini expansions and different starting setups, so you will want to play it again and again.
