In Ecologies you build food webs in different habitats all over the world. Each area has its own nature and gives you nice rewards when it is healthy and in balance. But watch out: your fellow players sometimes find it easier to disturb your nature than to look after their own. In all that busy bustle you have to decide how best to protect your own habitats. At the bottom you place plants, above them the animals and right at the top the predators. Every card tells you what an animal eats and who eats it in turn. Just like in Catan, you trade with the others at the table: you need something, someone else needs something too, and so you help each other, or not. It is a race to twelve points, where animals at the top of the pyramid are worth the most. There are also cards you can use to happily mess up your opponents' plans. The game was designed by a biologist and is even used in classrooms to teach real knowledge about nature. Still, you do not have to be a born scientist to enjoy it. With 77 different organisms, 7 habitats and beautiful old Victorian drawings, this is a game that keeps you at the table for hours. You play it with 1 to 6 players and a game takes about an hour and a half.
