Checkers

Two players, a board with squares and a handful of discs. That is all you need for a game of Checkers. You slide your discs diagonally across the board, one square per turn. Do you see an opponent's disc right next to you, with an empty square behind it? Then you jump over it and take it off the board. The nice part is that you may not skip a jump if one is available. This creates a game where you sometimes offer up a disc on purpose, so you can then take several of your opponent's pieces in one go. Whoever reads the board well sees those chances coming. You win by taking all of the other player's discs, or by boxing them in so they cannot move at all. Checkers is also known as draughts and belongs to a large family of classic board games. It is set up in no time and after half an hour you know who won. Perfect for a quiet moment together, or for finally getting that rematch.
