It is the early morning of 1 July 1916. You are standing in the trench with your platoon, ready to climb over the top. Ahead of you lie the German positions and the rattle of machine guns. In Battle of the Somme: Over the Top, July 1st 1916 you play through this hard day on your own, the bloodiest day in British army history. You lead a platoon of 45 soldiers and try to reach the enemy trench with as few losses as possible. What makes this game special: every soldier has his own name and his own counter. Before you start, you pick one man who represents you. To win, your platoon must take the trench and your man must survive. You first make your attack plan and then watch it all unfold before your eyes. It feels like a cross between a classic wargame and a historical roleplaying game, with seventeen scenarios based on real units, plus campaign games. This is the PDF version, with a 50 page colour rulebook, a hex map, 540 soldier counters with their own names, markers and a reference sheet. It also includes an extra counter set with two historical platoons and two extra scenarios. You will need your own six sided die and a deck of playing cards. Besides pure playing fun, this game also gives an honest and gripping picture of trench warfare in the First World War.
