Rome is teetering. In Barbarians at the Gates: The Decline and Fall of the Western Roman Empire 337 - 476 the two of you live through the last century of the Western Roman Empire. One player commands the Roman legions and the peoples who live peacefully within the borders. The other player leads the rebel emperors and the Germanic tribes rattling at the gates. Who will hold Europe in their grip? The game takes place on a map of the empire, divided into eleven districts with places such as Roma, Massilia and Nova Carthago. They are linked by Roman roads, rough tracks and rivers like the Danube and the Rhine. You take turns playing cards to set your armies and leaders in motion. Names you may know show up: Aetius, who stays loyal to Rome, Attila with his Huns, Alaric at the head of the Goths. They besiege cities, raid across the border or even seize the imperial throne. Where armies meet, battle awaits, and with battle comes eternal glory or a nameless grave. Expect a long, gripping evening at the table. With around five hours of play time, this is a game to really sink into, together with someone who loves history and tension as much as you do. Will enough of Roman civilisation survive for a later revival, or will Europe slip into the dark ages? That is up to you.
