A disaster unfolds in Lisboa

On November 1, 1755, Lisboa was struck by an earthquake with an estimated magnitude of 8.5 to 9 on the Richter scale, followed by a devastating tsunami and three days of raging fires. The city was almost completely destroyed.

Reconstruction

The Marquis of Pombal, Sebastião José de Carvalho e Melo, was then foreign minister. The king charged him with the reconstruction of Lisboa. The marquis assembled a team of engineers and architects to assist him in this reconstruction.

Lisboa is played on a real map of the city. During the planning of the reconstruction of the inner city, the types of businesses allowed on each street were predetermined. Clockmakers and goldsmiths had their streets; as did bookstores and libraries; tailors and silk sellers; as well as toolmakers. This is all covered on the Lisboa sign.

You are a member of the nobility, and you use your influence in the reconstruction and business development of the new city.

With the cards in your hand, you work with builders and architects to rebuild Lisboa, while the marquis develops commerce and the king oversees politics as the magnificent new city reopens.

As you achieve success, influence, fame and fortune, you will achieve true triumph by collecting the most recognized symbol of greatness in 18th century Europe: Wigs!
