John Company takes you to eighteenth-century Great Britain, where families try to make their name through the powerful, and infamous, British East India Company.
You do not run your own business. Instead, you steer the Company together, and every decision is a mix of discussion, self-interest and negotiation. The organisation sometimes grows to remarkable heights, but it can just as easily collapse under its own weight.
During the game you try to secure the right positions, use your influence and seize opportunities within the Company at just the right moment. Much of it is open to negotiation: loans, appointments, support, even the amount of risk you are willing to carry. In the end, though, it is not about wealth but about reputation. Family members can retire and build prestigious estates, but you do not fully control when those moments come, which makes every choice even more exciting.
John Company treats its theme with care and seriousness. The game shows how power, trade and colonial politics influenced each other, and it asks players to engage with that context consciously. An impressive and deeply strategic game for groups who enjoy negotiating, manoeuvring and reflecting on the past together.
