Diatoms

Deep in the water all around us live creatures you cannot see with the naked eye. Diatoms, they are called. Tiny algae cells with the most beautiful shapes and patterns, with an outer layer of silica that makes them look almost like glass. In Diatoms you join a society that collects these little wonders and arranges them into small mosaics. Today you are making your own entry for the exhibition. On your turn you place tiles that represent colonies of algae. Where you place them decides which diatoms you get: different colours and shapes. You then arrange those on your own board, thinking carefully about how everything will count at the end. Matching colours, variety in shapes and nice symmetry along the centre lines all score points. And every game can bring in a guest judge, each with their own way of scoring. That way the game plays a little differently every time. Would you rather play alone? You can. In the solo variant you collect tiles just like in the normal game, but you try to build a mosaic that matches the tasks you are given. A calm, puzzly game for young and old, in which you grow something beautiful together at the table.
