Publisher: Deep Thought Games
Climb aboard the railways that once ran straight through the American Midwest. In 1846: The Race for the Midwest you build up a network of tracks, stations and trains together, while trying to become the richest player at the table. At the end everything counts: your cash, the value of your shares and the private companies you own. Whoever has raked in the most wins. The game alternates between stock rounds and operating rounds. In the stock rounds you buy and sell shares in railway companies. After that you get to work: laying track, placing stations, running trains and paying out the profits or setting them aside instead. The largest shareholder of a company is in charge and makes all the decisions. So you keep building, reinvesting and making decisions until the bank runs out. 1846 has a few quirks of its own that make it extra exciting. The number of companies, private companies and the size of the bank all adjust to the number of players. Instead of an auction you start with a draft of private companies, which creates hidden information and a hint of surprise. Does your train run all the way from the east coast to the west? Then you earn extra. Count on having to think carefully about your money, because almost every piece of track costs something. A solid adventure for three to five players who enjoy a long, absorbing game night.
