The Castles of Burgundy

The Castles of Burgundy are located in Burgundy, in High Medieval France. Each player takes on the role of an aristocrat, originally ruling a small principality. As they play, they want to build settlements and powerful castles, trade along the river, exploit silver mines, and use the knowledge of travelers.

The game is about players taking settlement tiles from the game board and placing them into their principality, which is represented by the player board. Each tile has a function that begins when the tile is placed into the principality. The principality itself consists of different regions, each requiring its own type of settlement tile.

How do you play The Castles of Burgundy

Elke Phase Start by filling the playing board with Settlement tiles and goods. At the beginning of every round:

• All players roll their two dice.
• The player whose turn it is then rolls a goods dice the one who decides where new goods appear on the board.

After that, players two actions play in turn order. You can choose from:

✅ Pick up a settlement tile Choose a tile from a depot with a number matching one of your dice and place it on your waiting area.
✅ Build a tile Move a tile from your waiting area to a spot on your player board with the same die number. Note: this spot must connect to a previously built tile and match the terrain type!
✅ Deliver goods – Sell a merchandise card with the same number as your die.
✅ Workers gathering – Draft workers to later adjust the value of your dice.

In addition, you may always buy a settlement tile from the central depot and place it on your player board.

Why is building so important?

The end of the game

The game ends after the fifth round of the fifth phase. After that, points will be awarded for:
💰 Leftover money and workers
📦 Undelivered Goods
Castle Special bonus points from certain tiles
